BVSc (Hons)

Co-Director of Lincoln Institute of Veterinary Business & Director of Marketing

Michael Powell is a veterinarian, business thought-leader, and a company director at Lincoln Institute of Veterinary Business. He is a veterinary practitioner with over 25 years of experience and a former owner of a multiple award-winning ASAV Hospital of Excellence, which enjoyed industry-leading commercial performance.

His professional passion and focus now lies in safeguarding the welfare of animals by provision of empowering education and support of the veterinary professionals around the world entrusted with their care.

As a committed veterinary industry advocate, Michael performed ground-breaking research into veterinarian attrition with a multi-national study of 1,500 veterinary professionals, completed in 2019, followed by the Global Veterinary Sustainability Survey in 2021. Both research studies provided an exceptional picture of the scale, impacts, and causes of premature departure of veterinarians from clinical practice around the world, as well as highlighted the specific opportunities to prevent it.

In 2018, Michael formed and chaired the Veterinary Shortage Think Tank and subsequent Steering Committee meetings, stimulating the first coordinated steps in Australasia to recognise the veterinary workforce crisis and address it. In 2021, in a joint initiative with Royal Canin, Michael led a world-first Veterinary Sustainability Pilot involving 127 practicing veterinarians in 25 countries around the world, which investigated the impact of targeted, non-technical competency training in supporting resilience and professional fulfillment.

To date, his research has informed Lincoln Institute of Veterinary Business’ evidence-based programs to support more than 1,400 veterinary professionals in 27 countries to enjoy more professional fulfilment and success, as well as securing commercial prosperity of the organisations they work within.

Michael’s promotion of more wellbeing for veterinary professionals and a sustainable industry future continues today in his work as an educator, researcher, veterinary business coach, and international speaker.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys spending time with his family and dogs. He unwinds surfing, camping, hiking and on off-road adventures in the beautiful region of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, where he is based.
